Enteroscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the small intestine, which is not easily accessible with traditional endoscopy methods. During an enteroscopy, a long, flexible tube called an enteroscope is inserted through the mouth or anus, and advanced through the digestive tract to reach the small intestine. The enteroscope contains a camera and light source, allowing the doctor to visualize the lining of the small intestine and diagnose conditions such as bleeding, ulcers, tumors, and inflammatory bowel disease. Enteroscopy can be performed for diagnostic purposes or to treat certain conditions, such as removing polyps or taking tissue samples for biopsy. It is typically used when other imaging tests, such as CT scans or standard endoscopy, are inconclusive or insufficient for diagnosis.
